One of the most troublesome areas of racism is in places of education. Finding a cure for this would be a major step towards ending racism in general. No one has ever thought of a solution yet, and racism will be strong as long as there isn't one. Slaves were never taught how to read or write, and their lack of education was facilitated by whites throughout the centuries. In the 1800's everyone's feelings about slavery, good or bad, culminated into the American Civil War. Also, during this period, the slaves were fighting to break free from their past stereotypes. A small percentage of them taught themselves to read and write and they began to teach others. The film ââ¬Å"Gloryâ⬠depicted how some blacks even fought in the Civil War. The film captures the essence of the pride that the 1st all Black Platoon carried and the feelings that whites had toward blacks, even at a time of war. The Civil War is important when looking at the origins of racism in education, because once the North had defeated the South in the war, the slaves were freed from bondage. Institutions of education were then put in place so that African Americans could have a place to learn. However, being freed from bondage did not mean that they would be freed from the terrible prejudice that still permeated the country. The schools that sprang up in all black areas were not given the public funding that they needed and deserved. They were usually only one room and very dirty, and were given the oldest and most worn out books and equipment that was available. Plus, there weren't many teachers who were qualified and were willing to teach at an all black school. Even though education was instituted for African Americans, which was a step in the right direction, it was a very small step and still didn't give African Americans the education they deserved. Effective Teaching Essay One of the professions that could be interesting on one side yet challenging on the other side is the teaching profession. Many people see teaching as an enterprise where people who are knowledgeable in a field of study transmit what they know to others who know little about that field of study. Generally, this is a misconception as this limits teaching to the content and does not consider actual learning. In the real sense, teaching is all encompassing as it deals with what is being taught, how it is being taught and the entire process of knowledge acquisition. As a teacher or an instructor, one must apply the right methods in disseminating information. There are different instructional methods that work for different set of people. Personally, I would not say that one is better than the other because I believe that all these instructional methods work, depending on the targeted students/participants and how the instructor or teacher can effectively use them. To speak on the whole, teaching is about imparting knowledge or skill and no matter the instructional method you use, the most important thing is that knowledge is being passed across the right way. Therefore, as an instructor, one must understand the studentââ¬â¢s need and identify/develop specific methods in order to create an atmosphere that is conducive for learning and that allows the impartation of knowledge and skill. In my years of teaching and instructing, I have come to discover some methods that have worked for me. I have come to identify these instructional methods as vital and thus applied it in my style of teaching. As a teacher, I have come to identify withy these principles as effective and vital to the teaching profession. Although there are many principles that I have incorporated in my style of teaching, I would discuss the ones that I consider the most vital in the following paragraphs. Personally, I am of the notion that effective teaching should take a student centered approach where focus shifts from the instructor to the student. In my classes, I create an atmosphere where the students feel at home and are more involved in the learning process. I have discovered that this helps in the building of their cognitive abilities. I make sure that I do not present myself as the boss in the class, rather I encourage them to participate and allow them make decisions on the pace we go and what is studied. Topics that are treated in class are chosen according to the studentââ¬â¢s needs and perceptions. I have monitored the effect that this has on the overall learning process and I have discovered that the students develop better problem solving skills. Furthermore, as a follow-up to the above method, I ensure that students participate more in the learning process. I am able to achieve this by seeking for their opinion about a topic in the start of each class. Apart from this, sometimes I initiate a debate in the class and play the role of an umpire as I hear their opinions. I then pick out relevant points from what they have said and use it as a starting point in introducing the topic to the class. I stipulate it in the class syllabus that class participation will be graded at the end of the course and this will add up to the points. In addition to this, I sometimes break the students into small groups and organize a mini class competition. This has worked greatly as it gives me an insight into their idea about the topic and thus I can be able to correct their misconceptions based on what I have heard them say. This encourages collaborative and group learning and this creates a warm atmosphere in the class. Another thing I do in my class is that I build a sense of curiosity in the students. This gives them the desire to learn more and look forward to what would be taught in the next class. At the end of each class, I give rhetorical questions that are open ended in nature, such that it builds suspense in them and makes them want to know the answers to the questions I give. I also ask them thought provoking questions and sometimes make a captivating statement about what will be introduced in the next class As a teacher, I have recognized that fact that there are different types of students. Some are naturally want to learn and are always ready to explore new possibilities. However, as this is true of some students, some other students are passive learners. When I spot this, a method I use is supporting these types of students to leave their comfort zones and create new possibilities for themselves. I achieve this by guiding their thoughts and making them participate in class. Some students are rather timid because they are scared of contributing the wrong thing in class. This makes them stay in their comfort zones and they seldom participate in class. In such a case I strive to build the confidence of such students and aid them in their thinking process by providing clues for them to hit the right ideas. This method helps them to develop confidence in themselves and come out of their shells to participate in class. In my years of teaching, I have seen students who are timid transform to become major contributors in class. Finally, I have discovered that learning requires a settled mind. Therefore I make sure that I do not becloud the students only with academic work. I make sure that I teach these students how to be successful in life as well as in school. I make them know that I am concerned about them and their welfare but I do not involve myself directly in their affairs. I always give my students a listening ear and operate an open door policy where they can relate better with me. Summarily, teaching could be challenging but there is a joy that comes from the fact that I am imparting knowledge to them. The fulfillment of a teacher or an instructor is exemplified in the good performance of his/her students. Suddenly the crowd erupts as a man comes strutting down to the squared circle. Accompanied by a beautiful busty young woman, the wrestler is cheered by his loyal fans and booed by his enemies. Soon , another man enters the stadium the same way as the first man. The two men stip into the ring with a certain sense of cockiness about themselves. Before the referee can even tell everyone that the match has started, the two men are already battling in the “squared circle';. During the fight there are many suspenseful moments. Brutally beating each other for five minutes the match is finally over with some bloodshed. Today people are taking wwf professional wrestling to the extreme. WWF wrestling is one of the most watched shows on television today. WWF stands for the World Wrestling Federation. Wrestling starte d sometime it the mid to late sixties and has changed dramatically over the years. When wrestling first came to be the wrestlers weren’t like they were today. Back in the olden days of WWF wrestling, the storyline of wrestling wasn’t as vulgar, and the industry was not as wide spread throughout the world. Today the whole industry of the WWF is benefitting from merchandise being sold all over the globe. Even though many people may consider wrestling to be fake, know that some aspects are very real. There have been some instances where people have gotten hurt and even died from a stunt gone bad. There was an instance about half a year ago when a professional wrestler named Owen Hart was repelling from the rafters on a cable and the piece that was attached to his harness snapped and he plummeted 40 feet broke his neck and died. This was a tragic loss to every wrestler and to the whole WWF world. If this isn’t real you wouldn’t know what was. Another example of r eality is when Stone Cold Steve Austin was being suplexed (a professional wrestling move when your opponent lifts you in the air and slams you into the mat), his opponent landed Austin wrong on the mat. This resulted in a career ending surgery for Steve Austin. One thing that wrestling has done over the past couple of years is raised media uproar pertaining to violence at home between children.

What Every Leader Needs to Know
In the book Leadership 101` by John C. Maxwell he delivered his point of views on how to develop the intellectual insight regarding and spiritual beliefs. Based on his achievements as a leader himself, Maxwell points out that it is important to express leadership through the application of public education the true meaning of faith in leadership. He further notes the procedures behind how to become a more enlightened leader, by having a common purpose and common vision. Through the said book, he discussed his hopes and dreams for himself as well as for the public education, for the different leaders and for the world. Leaders should always be open-minded in terms of the ideas and theories that are represented by the members of the public constituents. Any problems should seriously be discussed properly. Trust- The most important things that the leaders in spiritual and educational area should apply is trust, leaders should always create their different perspectives as well as the progressive idea on how to lead a certain group; however, trust is the major factor in continuously aiming and becoming a leader. Parents and taxpayers see falling test scores, inclusion, affective learning, self ââ¬â esteem training, and values clarification lessons as proof that schools are not teaching as much material as they used to. Furthermore, they believe the material being taught is not as difficult as it should be. Parents and taxpayers demand that ââ¬Å"basic skillsâ⬠regain the attention of educators. They wonder how a person who lacks the skill to complete an employment application managed to graduate from a public high school. This is a strong perception in the community, one educator would be unwise to dismiss as ââ¬Å"hate mongering from the radical right.â⬠The lack of academic standards in the public schools is profound. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 1930;â⬠most of the 1 million white illiterates and 2 million black illiterates were people over the age of 50 who had never been to school. By 1990, 30 to 35 million American citizens could not read. Most are people under 50 who have been to school for at least eight yearsâ⬠(Wood, 1992,p.51). In response to these problems Noble prizewinning economist Milton Friedman developed a plan that, though a radical departure from the status quo, would empower parents as well as quality educators. The idea is to set up a sort of free market system of education: parents shop for the school they want, which receives that childââ¬â¢s portion of the school budget (7,000 in New Jersey, for example). The schools that are picked must improve to compete or else close their doors (Tashman 1992). Functionalism Functionalist Perspective and Theory The functionalist perspective, also called functionalism, is one of the major theoretical perspectives in sociology. It has its origins in the works of Emile Durkheim, who was especially interested in how social order is possible or how society remains relatively stable. As such, it is a theory that focuses on the macro-level of social structure, rather than the micro-level of everyday life. Notable theorists include Herbert Spencer,à Talcott Parsons, and Robert K. Merton. Emile Durkheim The totality of beliefs and sentiments common to the average members of a society forms a determinate system with a life of its own. It can be termed the collective or creative consciousness. The Division of Labour (1893) Theory Overview Functionalism interprets each part of society in terms of how it contributes to the stability of the whole society. Society is more than the sum of its parts; rather, each part of society is functional for the stability of the whole. Durkheim actually envisioned society as an organism, and just like within an organism, each component plays a necessary part, but none can function alone, and one experiences a crisis or fails, other parts must adapt to fill the void in some way. Within functionalist theory, the different parts of society are primarily composed of social institutions, each of which is designed to fill different needs, and each of which has particular consequences for the form and shape of society. The parts all depend on each other. The core institutions defined by sociology and which are important to understanding for this theory include family, government, economy, media, education, and religion. According to functionalism, an institution only exists because it serves a vital role in the functioning of society. If it no longer serves a role, an institution will die away. When new needs evolve or emerge, new institutions will be created to meet them. Lets consider the relationships between and functions of some core institutions. In most societies, the government, or state, provides education for the children of the family, which in turn pays taxes on which the state depends to keep itself running. The family is dependent upon the school to help children grow up to have good jobs so that they can raise and support their own families. In the process, the children become law-abiding, taxpaying citizens, who in turn support the state. From the functionalist perspective, if all goes well, the parts of society produce order, stability, and productivity. If all does not go well, the parts of society then must adapt to produce new forms of order, stability, and productivity. Functionalism emphasizes the consensus and order that exist in society, focusing on social stability and shared public values. From this perspective, disorganization in the system, such as deviant behavior, leads to change because societal components must adjust to achieve stability. When one part of the system is not working or is dysfunctional, it affects all other parts and creates social problems, which leads to social change. Functionalist Perspective in American Sociology The functionalist perspective achieved its greatest popularity among American sociologists in the 1940s and 50s. While European functionalists originally focused on explaining the inner workings of social order, American functionalists focused on discovering the functions of human behavior. Among these American functionalist sociologists is Robert K. Merton, who divided human functions into two types: manifest functions, which are intentional and obvious, and latent functions, which are unintentional and not obvious. The manifest function of attending a church or synagogue, for instance, is to worship as part of a religious community, but its latent function may be to help members learn to discern personal from institutional values. With common sense, manifest functions become easily apparent. Yet this is not necessarily the case for latent functions, which often demand a sociological approach to be revealed. Antonio Gramsci. Some critics, like Italian theorist Antonio Gramsci, claim that the perspective justifies the status quo and the process of cultural hegemony which maintains it. Functionalism does not encourage people to take an active role in changing their social environment, even when doing so may benefit them. Instead, functionalism sees agitating for social change as undesirable because the various parts of society will compensate in a seeminglyà natural wayà for any problems that may arise. Other authors suggest that during this 70year struggle individual campaigns and petitions were carried out in attempts to elucidate the womenââ¬â¢s state of affairs at every level. The feminist movement draws from a series of historical, political and public campaigns and advocacy undertaken by many women suffragists to deliver the modern day American woman. The background and the Beginning: Around 1800s womenââ¬â¢s life was characteristically quite hard. Earlier works by Lucy Stone, the founder of ââ¬Å"American Woman Suffrage Associationâ⬠asserting that most of the women during this period worked in unbearable cotton mills and associated poor living conditions with peanut pay. Women oppression was so widespread that women were never allowed opportunities to testify in court cases nor speak before a gathering. While drawing from the United Statesââ¬â¢ independence declaration, this Convention thus declared that, ââ¬Å"We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men and women are created equalâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (National Organization for Women) though it did not escape without saying that these movements faced strong opposition from their male counterparts who still believed that women we re better if they were represented by men.
